In your adult years, losing a tooth is not a good sign. It is not normal for adult teeth to be worn out nor for it to be loose. It is crucial to see your dentist immediately when you notice your tooth’s first signs becoming loose. You should be aware that it may be caused by periodontal (gum disease) disease or bacterial infection that weakened the tooth structure that supports the bone and gums. It is an underlying problem that needs to be taken care of immediately. By seeing your dentist, your dentist can figure out the first step that needs to be taken. The dentist will then determine the best possible treatment plan to assist the issue and minimize any further damages.

The best technique to treat the cause is to secure the loose tooth by a method called splinting. This is to help stabilize the surrounding area (neighboring teeth) from being affected. In short terms, this allows the teeth to be structured without movement. The splinting treatment can be temporary or permanent, depending on the issue. The temporary splinting involves composite materials, usually with or without the strips of metal, to bind the loose tooth to the more vital tooth for the foundation for healing. There are other methods in terms of temporary splinting. For example, one way is extra-coronal splinting, where the material is applied to the enamel across the loose tooth and the teeth surrounding to support it. Another way is intra-coronal splinting, where there is a small incision across the affected teeth and insertions of metal ligatures to bond within the tooth. These methods are for the natural gums to heal and reattach. However, if the dentist is aware that the loose tooth cannot regain its natural gum attachment, a permanent splint will be recommended. Whichever method the dentist decides to use, the importance will always be focused on the gums and root of the tooth.
