Gum Disease Affects Many Americans

That's almost half of all American adults over the age of 30, making gum disease one of the most widespread diseases in the country.

More Reasons to Consider Scaling and Root Planing

At his practice in Englewood, NJDr. Chetan S. Patil provides gentle and effective scaling and root planing to target and eliminate deep-seated plaque and help relieve the first stages of periodontal disease. Bacteria on the surface of teeth can eventually form pockets between teeth and gums. As infection deepens the pockets, gums become inflamed and irritated. This condition is known as gingivitis, one of the earliest stages of periodontal disease. The effects of gum disease can often be reversed when treatment is provided at this stage. Professional periodontal care is critical in preventing tooth loss that comes with more advanced periodontal disease.

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is a professional dental treatment that can prevent gum disease from worsening. While dental plaque on the teeth can be removed with regular brushing and flossing, hardened plaque—known as tartar—beneath the gum line cannot be removed without professional intervention. Scaling removes this bacteria-laden plaque below your gum line, and planing smooths the surface of the roots of your teeth, eliminating spots where bacteria can grow. Treating gum disease in the earliest possible stages can prevent more invasive treatments—such as gum grafts and flap surgery—in the future. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and the need for extensive restorative treatments, such as dental implants

Treating Periodontal Disease

During the procedure, Dr. Patil will numb your gums with a topical anesthetic. If you require stronger sedation, please speak to him about other available sedation options so we can ensure your comfort. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Patil will use a scaling instrument to remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line, in between teeth, and deep into the pockets. A planing instrument will smooth the base of the tooth so that gums can reattach and prevent bacteria from becoming trapped. Dr. Patil may recommend a special oral rinse or topical antibiotic to be used after the procedure to further promote healing.

Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing

While scaling and root planing can treat periodontal disease, it can also aid in the prevention of other serious health conditions. Research has indicated that periodontal disease increases your risk for heart disease, stroke, and dementia. Periodontal disease may also make it more difficult for patients with diabetes to control their blood sugar levels. In addition to reducing your risk for these serious conditions, preventing periodontal disease can help ensure that more minor conditions, such as bad breath, do not cause you embarrassment.

Maintaining Patient Comfort

In Dr. Patil’s practice, maintaining patient comfort is of paramount importance. Dr. Patil and his team employ a variety of techniques, sedation methods, and the most advanced technology to ensure that your treatment is as comfortable as possible. Options include topical anesthetics, oral sedation, and nitrous oxide, as appropriate to your procedure. Through the use of the DentalVibe Injection Comfort System, Dr. Patil ensures that Novocain, a local anesthetic, can be delivered without discomfort.
